Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical technique that removes excess fat from under the skin through the simple process of suction. A small stainless steel tube, a cannula, is inserted into the fat through the skin and attached to a suction device. Fat is sucked out literally through the body via the cannula to instantly reduce overall body fat to tone areas like the hips, abdomen and thighs.
When a person loses weight, the mere size of the fat cells in his or her body is reduced while the number of fat cells remains the same, therefore there is always the possibility of these fat cells filling up with new fat and swelling to induce obesity. Since liposuction effectively removes the fat cells from the body, the number of fat cells is reduced, therefore removing the possibility of a possible relapse.
It is desirable to go for liposuction only if the body weight remains excessive despite regular exercise and proper dieting for over a period of one year under the care of a professional. Liposuction should not be seen as an alternative to a healthy and active lifestyle. It is merely an aid towards the end.
The complications are the same as other surgeries.
